Voltus, a San Francisco-based distributed energy resource (DER) technology company and virtual power plant operator, announced on October 8, 2026, that it raised $225 million in an oversubscribed Series D funding round.
The financing was led by Generation Investment Management, with Activate Capital and Vitol serving as co-leads. Broadscale Group, Climate Investment, NGP, Ajax Strategies and All Aboard Fund also participated in the round.
Founded in 2016, Voltus was co-founded by Gregg Dixon, Dana Guernsey, Matthew Plante and Neil Lakin. The company is led by CEO Dana Guernsey and operates a technology platform that connects distributed energy resources to electricity markets across the United States and Canada.
Voltus enables businesses, industrial facilities and distributed energy resource owners to generate revenue by adjusting electricity consumption or making energy resources available to the grid. Its platform coordinates flexible electricity demand, distributed generation, battery storage, energy efficiency systems and electric vehicle resources.
The company plans to use the new financing to expand its virtual power plant operations, increase connected battery capacity and advance its Bring Your Own Capacity (BYOC) program in the PJM and MISO electricity markets.
Voltus expects to expand its platform to 20 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 while strengthening operations across the US and Canada. Its BYOC program is designed to make existing and newly aggregated distributed energy resources available to support growing electricity demand.
The Series D follows Voltus’s $31 million Series C financing announced in May 2021. That earlier round was led by Activate Capital, with participation from NGP Energy Technology Partners III, Prelude Ventures and Ajax Strategies.
In June 2026, Voltus also announced an agreement with Google to deliver up to 100 megawatts of distributed energy capacity through its BYOC model in PJM. The collaboration forms part of the company’s efforts to use distributed resources to support large electricity customers and grid reliability.
