New York-based Biotia raised $9 million in new financing from healthcare investors and operators. The capital will support expansion across women's health and orthopedic diagnostics.

Biotia, a New York City-based clinical metagenomics company, has raised $9 million in new financing. Investors in the round included VillageMD co-founders Tim Barry and Dr. Clive Fields, Convergent Ventures, DigitalDx Ventures, Cloquet Capital Partners, Continuum Health Ventures, I-Lab Angels, EGB Capital, Leawood Venture Capital, Red Bear Angels, Red Bear Ventures and others.

Founded in 2016, Biotia is a spinout of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech. Niamh O’Hara serves as co-founder and CEO, while Christopher Mason is co-founder and global director.

Biotia develops infectious disease diagnostics using clinical metagenomics, pathogen genomics and artificial intelligence. Its flagship BIOTIA-ID Urine Test is designed to identify pathogens responsible for recurrent and complicated urinary tract infections. The company operates a high-complexity, CLIA-certified diagnostic laboratory in New York City, with the urine test available to physicians and patients across all 50 US states.

The company plans to use the new capital to scale its New York City laboratory, expand its diagnostic offering in women’s health, pursue reimbursement and advance into orthopedic diagnostics.

Alongside the financing, Biotia expanded its board and advisory network. DigitalDx Ventures CEO Michele Colucci is serving as board chair, Tim Barry has joined the board, and Clive Fields has joined as a board observer.

Biotia previously announced an oversubscribed $8 million Series A in August 2022 led by OCA Ventures, with participation from Continuum Health Ventures, Phoenix Venture Partners, SeedToB Capital, SK Square Americas, DigitalDx Ventures and other investors.
