Redefine Surgery has closed a pre-seed financing round, bringing its total capital raised to $10 million. The medtech startup is developing an AI and robotics-based platform for surgery.

Redefine Surgery, an Edison, New Jersey-based medical technology startup, closed a pre-seed financing round that brought its total capital raised to $10 million. The company said the financing was backed predominantly by surgeon investors and will support continued development of its surgical intelligence platform as it works toward commercialization.

Founded in 2023 by Peter Verrillo, Ignacio Tzoumas and Stephen Potter, Redefine Surgery is developing technology for surgical applications, initially focused on orthopedic surgery.

The Redefine Platform combines computer vision, artificial intelligence and robotics for surgical navigation and related applications. The company says its technology is designed to work across surgical workflows while keeping surgeons actively involved. The platform remains under development and is not yet commercially available or cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The financing announcement followed a partnership with Catalyst OrthoScience, which joined Redefine Surgery as its founding partner for shoulder applications. The companies plan to develop an integrated surgical intelligence system spanning areas including preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, workflow optimization, data capture and procedural analysis for shoulder replacement procedures.
