US medical device startup Sharp Biomedical has secured pre-seed funding led by gener8tor 1889, with participation from physician angel investors. The capital will support development and testing of its first spinal implant and surgical toolset.

Sharp Biomedical, a US-based medical device startup focused on spinal care, announced the closing of a pre-seed funding round on October 12, 2026. The round was led by gener8tor 1889, a North Dakota venture capital fund, with participation from physician angel investors. The funding amount was not disclosed.

Founded in 2024 and led by founder and CEO Dan Newman, Sharp Biomedical develops minimally invasive medical devices and surgical instruments for spinal procedures. The company focuses on creating treatment options that can be performed in outpatient pain clinics and surgery centres.

Sharp Biomedical is developing implant systems and manual surgical procedures intended for patients experiencing early-to-mid-stage chronic pain. Its approach is designed to reduce dependence on large hospital facilities, robotic equipment and complex surgical infrastructure.

The company is developing a spinal fusion device called Altitude by Sharp. The implant is designed for insertion through a small incision, with an expandable structure intended to limit the need for bone dissection. The device remains under development.

Sharp Biomedical plans to use the new funding to support the development and testing of its first purpose-built surgical toolset and implant system. The financing is intended to advance the company’s product development programme as it works towards bringing its initial spinal care technology to market.
