Opentrons Labworks Inc., a New York-based laboratory robotics and automation company, has raised $40 million in a Series E funding round led by healthcare investment firm Avego, with participation from BroadOak Capital Partners. The financing was announced on October 29, 2026.
Founded in 2014, Opentrons was co-founded by William Canine and Chiu Chau. The company develops programmable laboratory robots and software that help scientists automate biological experiments and reduce repetitive manual work. Its products serve academic research institutions, biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and diagnostic laboratories.
Opentrons’ technology includes the Opentrons Flex platform, which combines laboratory robotics with software for designing, executing and refining experimental workflows. Its open, API-driven architecture enables researchers to integrate automated laboratory equipment with software and AI-based systems.
The company plans to use the new capital to expand its robotics, software and data infrastructure, with a particular focus on AI-driven experimental execution. The investment will also support additional automation capabilities, faster development of laboratory protocols, integration with other laboratory instruments and expansion into new markets.
Led by CEO James Atwood, Opentrons is developing systems that connect AI-generated experimental designs with physical laboratory execution, allowing experimental results to inform subsequent research workflows.
According to the company, more than 11,000 Opentrons robots have been deployed in laboratories across over 80 countries. Its installed systems include deployments at major pharmaceutical companies and leading research universities.
Opentrons previously announced a $200 million Series C funding round in September 2021, led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from Khosla Ventures. That financing supported the expansion of its automated laboratory platform for life sciences and healthcare applications.
The latest Series E financing will support Opentrons’ continued development of laboratory automation systems that connect robotics, experimental data and AI-based scientific research.
