Backbone, a Belgian food technology startup developing AI-powered quality and compliance software for food manufacturers, has raised €4 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Pitchdrive. PROfounders Capital, Passion Capital and existing investor 100IN participated alongside investors from Belgium’s food industry, including Agristo and Darta.

Founded in 2025 by Louis Opsomer, Siska Lannoo and Julien Steel, Backbone builds a platform that connects quality-related information across food manufacturing operations. The system brings together supplier documentation, laboratory results, internal procedures and regulatory requirements, then structures and checks that information against standards including IFS, BRCGS and FSSC 22000.

The platform also uses AI agents for workflows such as monitoring supplier certificates, checking incoming documents and laboratory results against specifications, and logging quality incidents. Backbone serves businesses across the food supply chain, including ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, packaging companies and distributors.

Backbone said the funding will support further product development, expanded marketing activities, and partnerships with international certification bodies and ERP implementation partners. The company has expanded beyond Belgium into the UK and the Netherlands and is targeting deployment across 250 production sites by the end of 2028.
