US biotechnology company Antheia has secured a conditional commitment for a long-term loan of up to $80 million from the Office of Strategic Capital. The proposed financing will support domestic production of critical pharmaceutical ingredients, subject to closing requirements.

Antheia, a US-based biotechnology company specializing in pharmaceutical biosynthesis, has received a conditional commitment for a direct, long-term loan of up to $80 million from the US Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC). The financing is intended to support the company’s plans to expand domestic manufacturing of essential pharmaceutical ingredients.

The proposed loan, together with additional private capital, would help Antheia establish manufacturing capacity in the United States for key starting materials (KSMs) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which are used to produce medicines. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers and strengthen pharmaceutical supply chains.

The commitment remains conditional. Before the loan can close, Antheia must satisfy financial, legal, technical, investment, due diligence and other requirements. The announcement therefore does not represent a completed loan disbursement.

Founded in 2015 by Dr. Christina Smolke and Dr. Kristy Hawkins, Antheia is headquartered in Menlo Park, California. Smolke serves as Chief Executive Officer, while Hawkins is Chief Scientific Officer. The company develops biosynthesis processes that use engineered microorganisms to manufacture pharmaceutical ingredients.

Antheia’s technology uses engineered yeast to produce complex pharmaceutical compounds through fermentation. Its platform is designed to offer an alternative to conventional manufacturing methods that depend on agricultural extraction or chemical synthesis. The company supplies pharmaceutical ingredients to customers globally.

The proposed financing follows Antheia’s earlier fundraising activity. In January 2026, the company announced an additional $24 million in Series C equity financing, bringing the total funded Series C round to $80 million. That equity financing is separate from the newly announced conditional government loan.

The conditional loan commitment forms part of Antheia’s strategy to expand US-based production of pharmaceutical ingredients, with the planned manufacturing investment intended to improve domestic access to materials used in essential medicines.
